Day 9

Today was somewhat compact in terms of being at the right place at the right time. We didn't have to be at Illuminarts Studio until 10:30 so we spent about an hour or so working on editing the beginning of the LINK film. The footage has mostly been cataloged so all that needs to happen now is decide which clips are the best to use and input them on the timeline in Final Cut Pro. We left AHS early seeing as how things could easily change at a photography studio so we arrived at downtown at 10:00. This gave Zach, Tony and I and opportunity to buy a cup of coffee and take a pre-shooting meditative walk. However, as soon as the clock struck 10:30, it was back to business as usual and we set up our equipment while Jerrica was shooting a photo session at the same time. Unlike our other internship shoots, we started this location by collecting B Role first and then conducting the interview. The most challenging part about this location was dealing with the inconvenience of having studio lighting with an open window on one of the walls. This didn't affect the photo shoot in the slightest but our camera was picking up an awful blue color when pointed away from the subject. It was very challenging to point the camera in the right direction to where this wouldn't be a problem.  The interviews went very smoothly despite Jerrica's nervous and shy behavior.

Our plan for the rest of the day was somewhat terminated though when we contacted Sara Martin, who was interning at the athletic department at Fort Lewis College, and were told that she wasn't going to be doing anything until 1:30. This did not match up with Tony's time frame because he had to teach SIG at AHS this afternoon so we had to abort shoot entirely. To my dismay, the information that Sara gave up was later proved to be incorrect which greatly disappointed me. I would have really liked to have shot one more location before the editing process started but I suppose that can be taken as another lesson. Expect to have things go in ways they were unintended to.

Day 8

Today was another long day of shooting two locations. We started at the Durango Discovery Museum where we would be filming three students and their internships. Clara Grey-Stallings, Gregor Wallace, and Trevin Verduzco are working as general interns for the museum and some of their duties include instructing young children in museum activities, leading tours around the museum and assisting in administrative responsibilities. The location itself was very difficult to work with which made most of the shooting challenging. the loud echos and noise level was hard on the microphones so we had to make sure that out audio levels were perfect every time we began a shot. However, I was able to complete my first ever three shot (three person) interview with all of the interns. This was very innovative in terms of our film-making process and I think it will ad a great deal of realism to the final project. When we interviewed the mentors at the Discovery Museum, we had to overcome the challenge of window reflection and angling the lights so they wouldn't bounce back in the camera. After all the interviews were complete, the rest of the shoot was all downhill from there. B role was easy to collect and many interesting things were happening in the museum which kept things interesting.

After lunch, I led Mr. Corona and Zach to one m most familiar locations, Station 1 of the Durango Fire and Rescue Department. My father has worked throughout the ranks of the Fire Department for 30 years so I am very familiar with the station and the people working there. Although my father want working today, I did manage to see a few of my old friends and even interviewed Captain Pete Tuck who I have know for a very long time. Duke Millet has been working with the fleet mechanics while Johnathan Cannon has been working with the Fire inspector and EMS team so we were able to see a lot of diversity between the two internships. We conducted our first outdoor interview today so we had to deal which a higher light filter and wind tolerance but this ult crisp looking ultimately led to a very crisp looking interview. We interviewed a few firemen and mechanics that were acting as mentors inside the truck bays of the fire station which provided us with some awesome backgrounds in the shots. Then, we collected B Role of Duke working on some of the trucks in the garage and we were even able to see Jonathan dress in fire gear and use one of the actual fire hoses in a staged fire. I can honestly say that this location has been the most visually abundant location we have shot thus far.

An important lesson I learned today was stageing B Role can often look even more realistic than following someone around with a camera.

Day 7

Today was one of the most exciting days of shooting I have seen so far. We began our day by traveling to Stoneage, which is a manufacturing company that produces high power water pressure cleaning tools. Elliott Saslow has been working there for the last week and a half as an administrative assistant and an assistant floor manager for this company. We began our shoot by taking a tour around the building, which is surprisingly similar to NBC's The Office, and decided where would be the most interesting places to capture footage. We then set up our interview location in one of the vacant conference rooms on the administration floor and started our interview process with Elliott. After asking our normal set of interview questions, we moved on to interviewing Elliott's mentor in her office. This was somewhat difficult to work with because of space issues and a natural light source coming from a window but we managed to change camera angles and make the shot work. We then followed Elliot around the warehouse and quality control center to gather more B Role. This was especially exciting because we were able to see how all of the parts the company sold were produced. By the time we finished, we had collected some of the most interesting footage we have shot so far.

After we took an hour for lunch, we visited Ty Macguffie at American General Media Center which broadcasts one of Durango's most popular radio stations, 99X. It was quite surprising to see DJ Cody Mellor in person. You would never have been able to guess correctly what he looks like without actually meeting him but I digress. Mr. Corona basically let Zach and I shoot this location solo which was a very rewarding experience in terms of a real world job. We pretty much ran this location by the books by interviewing Ty, then Cody, and finishing up the shooting with collecting B Role. The most exciting part of the shoot though was watching Ty record an audio clip that will be used in his radio show Dubstep Decibel which will be aired of Saturday night.

One of the lessons I learned today was that the camera can get you into some very cool places that many other people will never have the opportunity to get in as well. I'd better hold on to my camera from now on.

Day 6

Today was somewhat disorganized as far as having a place to shoot was not available went. So, with this taken into consideration, my team and I decided to start imputing the assortment of footage we had collected the previous week into the computers at AHS to begin editing the LINK project. This was somewhat difficult due to some unfortunate conversion errors that happened between Zach's camera and the hard drive we were using to transfer the files into Final Cut Pro, but eventually we were able to make all the footage work in the new computer.

It was cool being able to see all of the shots and interviews we took the previous week on a large screen and have the ability to edit said footage. I began to notice that the camera we were using was capturing some of the best video I've ever worked with which is great for the final project.  am very excited to release the first ever LINK promotional video in high definition. Below is the copy of the HOS Talk that was aired on Friday. We received a very positive reaction for this HOS Talk and many people went as far as to say it was the best yet!

Day 5

I was absent from my internship site today because I will be playing lacrosse in Grand Junction for the remainder of the weekend I am still disappointed that I will miss both Cori Gianinni's and Stephan Devoust's internships today but I look forward to playing the top team in the Western Colorado lacrosse division.

Day 4

Today we shot the first on location interview at the Durango Humane Scociety. Marlene Jensen has been working with her mentor, Keith Dunning, for the past three days as an intern working in the animal shelter. This was the first internship that we were able to shoot and overal it was a pretty exciting day.

We arrived at AHS at 9:00 and gathered together all of our equipment and went through a brief rundown of the interview questions. We then traveled to the La Plata Humane Society animal shelter and met with Keith Dunning, one of the board members of the Humane Society and Marlene's mentor. He gave us a quick tour of the building which was very helpful to our efforts as a film crew because we could see what places would work well for interviews and what locations would serve as visuals or "B Role" as its called in the industry. We set up our interview in one of the conference rooms and quickly set up lights, chair positions, and the camera. From here, we interviewed both Marlene and Keith, asking them the questions that we tailored to all of the internships.

After we deconstructed the interview location, we followed Marlene  around the shelter as she helped with animal car duties such as rotating dogs outside and maintaining cages. Here we gathered the B Role that would be used in our project. Despite my fear of rambunctious dogs, we were able to retrieve a lot of very valuable footage which will help us greatly in the editing process.

After we left the shelter, we traveled back to AHS, finished the HOS Talk and worked with some of the new students in the Film SIG. This caused the afternoon to move relativity slow but putting the finishing touches on the HOS talk and having the film students give us feedback on the video was very pleasing to see because of the positive reaction that it produced. Ultimately, today was very productive and I am a little saddened by the fact that I will be missing tomorrow's shoots.

Day 3

Today we worked on the two H's : Hospus and The HOS talk. The student ambassador program was put in charge of setting up the main dining room for the Hospus event that would commence later tonight so my team and I thought that it would be beneficial to shoot this location. This would give AHS more stock footage to use for other video projects. The shooting did not take up a lot of time so the rest of the day was pretty wide open to whatever we wanted to do.
We then traveled back to AHS to film a few more scenes in the HOS talk and finalized the editing process of the HOS talk (which was supposed to be aired last Friday but got pushed back to this Friday). Mr. Corona gave Zach and I a lesson in color correction in Final Cut Pro, the go to film editing program used in today's industry, as well as a lesson in the addition of sound effects to a project. This was very beneficial to the HOS talk and I can confidently say that this next HOS talk will be very well received.

We were also able to get set up for the shooting or shoosting as I like to call it, which would commence at other internships throughout the rest of the week.
